L'une des premières stars internationales du cinéma, Charlot, vagabond aussi drôle qu'émouvant, devient dès son apparition en 1914 la coqueluche du monde occidental, s'emparant des salles obscures et s'affichant dans les journaux et les publicités. Mais le personnage créé par Charlie Chaplin n'est pas qu'un phénomène médiatique et populaire. Le cinéaste a aussi une influence directe sur les artistes de son temps, dont il partage bon nombre de réflexions et préoccupations. L'exposition propose ainsi une lecture inédite des œuvres d'avant-garde au travers du cinéma de Charlie Chaplin. De Fernand Léger à Marc Chagall, d'Alexander Calder à René Magritte, près de 200 œuvres provenant de collections du monde entier se déploient au regard du cinéma chaplinien. C'est en 1922, alors qu'il vient d'arriver à Paris, que Man Ray fait ses premiers pas dans la photographie de mode. Il réalise alors de nombreux portraits de figures marquantes d'un milieu parisien mêlant membres de la « colonie américaine », représentants de la bonne société, artistes, écrivains... Il bénéficie assez vite de commandes dans le domaine de la publicité et de la mode en raison de son style aisément identifiable, celui du groupe surréaliste, qui joue à merveille du scandale et de la provocation. Son travail parfaitement maîtrisé, tempéré par un classicisme de bon ton, pimenté par un érotisme lisse, génère des images pleinement assimilables par ses commanditaires. Au tournant des années 1930, Man Ray évolue vers un style plus spontané, conforme à l'évolution du modèle féminin que des artifices techniques - solarisation, inversion négative, découpage, superpositions - mettent brillamment en valeur. Les années passées sous contrat avec le magazine américain Harper's Bazaar (1934-1939) consacrent la liberté technique et formelle du photographe et marquent son apogée dans ce domaine. À travers le regard d'un artiste, peintre et photographe, c'est aussi les relations entre la mode de toute une époque, celle de l'entre-deux-guerres, et sa représentation qui sont ici mises en lumière.

Bringing together painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, performance, film and archival material, this publication highlights the work of artists, performers, designers, musicians and writers such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Loïe Fuller, Josef Hoffmann, Wyndham Lewis and Giacomo Balla, as well as Ramón Alva de la Canal, Theo van Doesburg, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Jeanne Mammen, Anita Berber, Aaron Douglas, Jacob Lawrence, Colette Omogbai, Twins Seven-Seven and Parviz Tanavoli. It includes photographs of the interiors of the Chat Noir in Paris, the Cafe L'Aubette in Strasbourg and the Mbari Club in Nigeria; a cocktail menu from the Cabaret Fledermaus in Vienna; a 1930s night club map of Harlem; posters and invitations advertising performances at the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich and Mexico City's Cafe de Nadie; and countless artworks that emerged from these spaces conveying the energy and excitement of the time.
